European Essential Partying

Croatia is a country deeply impassioned and protective of its past, whilst it’s embracing the future too. It has a history of celebrations and festivals, which are often an amalgamation of religion and tradition steeped in folklore.  More recently, it has become the epic backdrop for a plethora of some of todays most inspired and current festivals. With over 1000 miles of magnificent coastline and countless beautiful beaches, it is the ideal location for a rapidly growing cultural playground and Croatia is fast becoming an essential European summer destination. Also it will be officially becoming the 28th member state of the European union in July 2013, meaning it will be even more accessible.

Traditional Festivals

The most important celebration of Croatian folklore is held in the capital of Zagreb every July, and nationally the most important celebrations are held on June 22nd, the Day of Antifascist Resistance; June 25th Croatian Statehood day; August 5th Croatian Victory day and October 8th, Croatian Independence Day. Place to place in Croatia, there are many variations of celebrations for all of these dates. More international events such as The Dubrovnik Summer Festival, first celebrated in 1949, attracts more foreign visitors and has a real international flavour.

Currently it is the more modern music festivals that are causing a stir in this picturesque country, contributing to it being such a hip new destination. The location for the majority of the festivals used to be the small Adriatic village of Petrcane, just a few miles away from the city of Zada. For 2012 they have now been moved slightly up the coast to Garden Tisno, which is an undiscovered secluded sandy bay a minutes’ walk from the village of Tisno. With crystal clear water and the view of islands on the horizon, Garden Tisno is like a dramatic natural amphitheatre, a magical and inspirational setting.

Here are just a few other events to look out for this summer:-

Stop Making Sense Festival 2- 6 August 2012

This festival is on the tail end of the Croatian festival scene. Last but not least, it is included in the Times top 100 festivals, and boasts ‘5 days of eclectic musical delights’.

There are lots more festivals across Croatia!  The above is a scrape on the proverbial iceberg. For the more hard-core festival going sunshine seekers, you could definately spend over a month going from festival to festival – time for a good summer!
