Mounthooley Bunkhouse, Wooler, Northumberland
Eleven miles from the nearest shops and pub, this shepherd’s cottage in the Northumberland National Park has recently been refurbished. It is well suited to families or groups, sleeping up to 24 in a mix of twins, quads and dorms. There is a well-equipped, self-catering kitchen and a log fire for drying post-hike socks. You can go walking, bird-watching, horse-riding, climbing or mountain biking near by, but don’t think about watching TV — there’s no reception.
