History and Culture
Culture lovers will also find the monasteries of St Anthony and St Paul fascinating – both hidden very deeply in the desert mountains of the East, around 200 km to the north of Hurghada. Both founding symbols of Christian monasticism, Coptic monks still inhabit the monasteries today.
Similarly, the Roman Ruins at Mons Claudianus are a real draw for archaeology fans, around a 90 minute drive to the south west of Hurghada, on the road to Qena. The site has the best Roman site preserved in the Eastern desert, once home to the Temple of Venus, The Pantheon and thousands of soldiers. Tour operators run excursions on a daily basis.
