Florentine New Year is traditionally celebrated on 25th March on the Annunciation feast. It commences with a morning procession from Palazzo Vecchio with people dressed in eclectic medieval dresses and musicians playing mellifluous music. Rievocazione Storica del Venerdì Santo


In Grassina, the town lying at 15 minutes’ drive from Florence is the stage for enactment of Passion of Christ play. New Testament episodes are faithfully recreated by the town residents. The scenes from the life of Christ are played in succession culminating in the crucifying of Jesus before tourists.


Scoppio del Carro


The ‘explosion of the cart’ event owes its origin to the Italy of 400 years back. A large wagon constructed in 1622 at three storeys high is pulled through the winding streets to the square between the Baptistery and the Cathedral. A group of white oxen decked up in garlands pulls the cart which is secured with fireworks and waits for a dove shaped rocket. The rocket standing for the Holy Spirit is aimed from the altar of cathedral. A furious dance of fire announces a bumper harvest.


Maggio Musicale Fiorentino


The May music festival in Florence starts from late April and continues through June. Classical music concerts and recitals of international acclaim are held across the city along with operas and ballets.


Patron Saint Feast Day or Calcio Storico


The patron saint of the city, St. John the Baptist is paid homage through fireworks on 24th June. Calcio Storico, the historical football match is played in the late afternoon after a procession through the winding routes from piazza Santa Maria Novella to piazza Santa Croce.
