Fuengirola has been a popular seaside holiday resort since the tourism boom of the 1960s hit the Costa del Sol. Unfortunately around this time unattractive apartment buildings and hotels were popping up everywhere along the coast, offering affordable and convenient accommodation for he hoards of holidaymakers that were heading to the Costa for some sunshine. Thankfully, along with its neighbours Torremolinos and Benalmadena, Fuengirola has undergone some serious improvements over the last decade and it is now one of the most appealing resorts on the Costa del Sol.

Thanks to Fuengirola’s close proximity to Malaga Airport, and a fast, clean and reliable train service that runs form the airport right into town, Fuengirola is a popular choice for family holidays, golfing breaks or a weekend getaway in the sun.

What makes Fuengirola such a great holiday resort?

Let’s start with the array of activities on offer. In the daytime head to the beach and try out one of the many watersports on offer in Fuengirola. You can try banana boating, jet skiing, parasailing and even jet boating. Many of the waterpsorts companies operate out of the marina which is easy to find from the centre of town. You can also book sea fishing trips from here or go on a dolphin spotting excursion. You can also get very reasonable priced food and drink from the restaurants and cafes that line the port. If you must get a ‘full English’ while you are away this is the place to go.

If you have kids to entertain there is a lot to do away from the lovely sandy beaches. Fuengirola Biopark is a fantastic zoo that is focused on conservation and educating about endangered species. There are hundreds of different species of animal here, from insects to gorillas and even very rare white tigers. There is also lots of space for kids to play on the large children’s park in the zoo. Parents can take a break and enjoy a cold drink on the terrace that overlooks the play area! There is also a great waterpark just 5 minutes’ from the centre of Fuengirola that is a great day out for kids and adults of all ages.

If you are a golfer there are numerous courses within 10 minutes’drive of central Fuengirola. Mijas Golf, Alhaurin Golf Club, Miraflores Golf, and La Cala Golf are just a few that are within easy reach. For those that like the outdoors but like to keep active in other ways there are planty of other things to do. The newly completed waterfront promenade that runs the length of the seafront in Fuengirola is perfect for jogging, walking, rollerblading or cycling along. If you want to get out of town then head up into the Sierra de Mijas Mountain range and go hiking, climbing, mountain biking or quad biking whilst taking in the spectacular views over Fuengirola’s coastline.


If you are a shopaholic and pefer to carry bags of shopping to keep fit then you’ll be kept happy in Fuengirola. There are hundreds of shops selling everything from shoes to straw donkeys. You’ll find the high street favourites like Mango and Zara but there are lots of independent shops as well selling lovely shoes and clothes. Fuengirola holds one of the largest markets in the whole pf Spain every Tuesday and Saturday morning and you will find a multitude of bargains on offer here.

If you like to dine out then you will be spoiled for choice as Fuengirola really does have a great choice of restaurants to suit all taste buds and all budgets. ‘Fish Alley’ is the famous food quarter in Fuengirola, a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with restaurants and tapas bars serving everything from local Spanish dishes and freshly caught seafood to Indian and Chinese cuisine. If you are willing to explore the streets away from the seafront there are lots of little hidden gems where you will find fantastic food.

The nightlife in Fuengirola with bars, pubs and clubs that stay open into the early hours. Along the seafront you’ll find old favourites like ‘The London Pub’ and the ‘Old Town Café’ where you can sit outside and enjoy a beer or a cocktail. Things don’t really get rowdy in Fuengirola until past midnight so you can enjoy a night out with the family without feeling that you are in the middle of an 18-30s resort.

Fuengirola really does have lots to offer holidaymakers and with Malaga Airport now greatly extended there are even more flights from the UK making it ideal for a sunshine getaway.
