Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Japan

Harry Potter has become a worldwide phenomenon, thanks to the success of the film franchise which brought the fictional universe to life. Dominating western entertainment for the best part of a decade now, the story of Harry Potter doesn’t seem to be dying down after the concluding book and movie to the series. In fact, it seems to be becoming more popular and fans have can enjoy the magic and fantasy for themselves. Universal Studios adopted the look and feel from the movies for their latest extension in Islands of Adventure Theme Park, Orlando. Dubbed the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it features the fantastical village of Hogsmead, complete with a replica of the Hogwarts School perched atop a cliff.  Here, fans can indulge and immerse themselves in the world by visiting shops and rides which are faithful to the scenes in the movies. It hs been a huge success for Universal Studios, as they plan to replace the classic Jaws thrill ride with a further extension to the theme park, but it doesn’t stop there.

Japan Plans For New Theme Park Franchise

With further plans underway for Universal’s Hollywood Theme Park and the recent opening of Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studios Tour in London, the popularity of H.P. appears to be getting bigger. With Universal’s operating cash flow growing 17.1 per cent year on year from the success of Harry Potter, it’s simple business to grow the theme to other parks.

Universal looks to Asia and its Park in Japan to develop the success, planning to recreate the Wizarding World of Harry Potter complete with a Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village – proving the franchise has not just gained popularity in Western culture. This new build will also exceed the original parks cost, reaching an estimated $500 million and scheduled to open in 2014. This is almost double the cost of the park in Orlando!  What will the Japanese audience think of this latest arrival? With the movies grossing over $900 million in that region, it seems as if they are waiting with anticipation for their first chance at experiencing the universe of Harry Potter.
